Thinking Out Loud: Packages, Eyebrows, and Other Thoughts

Happy Thursday, everyone! It’s almost the weekend which means a little more relaxation as well as having extra time to study and get some freelance work done. It also means that it’s one of my favorite days for blogging since today is Thinking Out Loud! Hosted by my favorite utensil, Spoons! (aka Amanda from Running With Spoons)

So let the word vomit commence!

1. One thing that’s always made me giddy is receiving packages. Or any mail in general. I think it has to do with growing up in the age of technology, but getting things by snail-mail make me feel all tingly inside. Especially if it involves an adorable gift from a bloggy friend! My friend Miranda and I have been exchanging care packages, and she was so sweet to send me some huckleberry jam! Such a thoughtful gift that’s unique to where she lives. Thanks, love!

It just so happened that everything seemed to come in the mail at once, so along with Miranda’s package, I also received a box of Kind bars to review and a crock pot I had ordered. I felt like a kid on Christmas morning with all those boxes waiting to be ripped open!

Kind Bars Variety Pack

Coolest packaging award goes to the people over at Kind! You open the box and everything falls out perfectly organized. The engineer in Kyle loved it and his first words when he saw it were “I appreciate that”.

I tried the dark chocolate sea salt bar and was literally (not figuratively, I was there, I swear) in heaven. SO GOOD.

The next few months for me are going to be pretty busy, so I wanted a solution on how to keep Apple of My Eye running when I’m stretched for time. I’m planning on throwing together a mess of ingredients into the slow cooker in the morning before my 8 a.m classes and being able to come back and have the food all ready for their photo shoot as well as a nice hot lunch. Confession: even though I’m a food blogger, when I’m not actually cooking for AoME, I usually just end up grazing on cereal/oatmeal/leftovers/bagels/toast/nut butter because I’m too lazy to cook for myself. Hopefully I can get myself out of that habit!

Stay tuned for a recipe for crock pot chicken caesar sandwiches and apple crisps (<—pie’s closest kin) in the near future.

2. A while back I mentioned that Kyle had helped me with a DIY project to make a faux table for my food photography. It came out wonderfully and I love how much character the wood brings to my pictures! The only real photos I’ve taken for the blog on it were for my Blueberry Pie Oatmeal, but I can already tell it’s going to be a huge asset for improving my photography :).

Healthy Blueberry Pie Oatmeal! Done in just 10 minutes and so delicious!

My favorite part would have to be the rich color and fun accents on the wood.

Kyle wrote up a step-by-step instruction post on how he made it, so if it’s something you’re potentially interested in doing yourself, look for his post tomorrow night :).

3. So this is going to be a weird statement, but I don’t really have eyebrows. I mean, I do, but they’re pretty light and definitely not defined. I guess I have to count my blessings, though, since I’m relatively hairless except for the hair on my head so I don’t need to shave my legs too often. Not that I really shave my legs for half the year anyways when it’s cold. Jeans/legging weather=mini forrest on my legs. Too much information? Yep. ANYWAYS. Going back to eyebrows. My roommate, Kelty, has the  fiercest eyebrows in town and, as we like to say, “they could kill a man”. We read a Buzzfeed article together about about “14 Before and After Photos That Prove Good Eyebrows Can Change Your Entire Face” and I had her fill them in since I was too much of an eyebrow-coward to really go over them darkly since I thought it looked weird, but I like how it looks! Penciled-in eyebrows for the win!

4. Going off makeup, I’m still going strong with my obsession with red lipstick. Everyday, all day!

Annddd that’s all for now! It’s almost 1 in the morning and I really need to get to bed. Sleep tight!

Question of the Day: Could your eyebrows kill a man?

Thinking Out Loud: Blog Gainz and Random Thoughts

Well howdy, friends! It’s Thursday which means another rendition of Thinking Out Loud, courtesy of the lovely Amanda from Running With Spoons. If you haven’t heard about it yet, it’s a day where us bloggers type whatever comes to mind. Easy and effortless writing? Sign me up!

Here we goooo!

 1. I’ve been making some pretty cool blogging gainz lately. Here are some of the fun things happening on Apple of My Eye at the moment!

  • I put up a new subscription bar at the top of my site and am trying to be good about sending out my mailing letter when I create a new recipe. Speaking of my mailing letter, I use Mailchimp and design each one of them personally. *Ahem self-promotion alert* you should sign up to get updates ;).

Example newsletter!

  • I updated my recipe page! Instead of just seeing boring text, now you can just click on an image that seems appealing and be taken to the recipe. The plugin I’m using is incredibly useful and updates my pages automatically for me when I post a new recipe. Love it!

  • I got hired for another freelance recipe job! I have to admit, it’s pretty cool for a college student like me to be offered jobs. Building up that resume! I am a little worried about the time commitment, though. I work for another health site as well and want to keep Apple of My Eye running too. My future seems like it’s going to be extremely food filled!

If anyone is interested in a tutorial post about how I got these new bloggy things to happen, just let me know :)!

 2. Latest food obsession? Kefir (a probiotic yogurt smoothie), cottage cheese, and granola. It’s packed with a ton of protein to help keep me full and it’s just so tasty and refreshing.

3. Active dates=the best. It’s been awfully windy around here, but Kyle and I still managed to get in a walk near the beach to stretch our legs and chat a bit. There’s nothing I love more than spending time with my best friend!

Annndd that’s about all I got for you guys today. I’m tired and it’s time to hit the hay.

Hope you’re having a wonderful Thursday!

Thinking Out Loud…

It’s been a rough week for me, so nothing sounds better than being able to spew out random thoughts and call it a post! Thanks for hosting, Amanda, always love how easy the writing comes!

Thinking-Out-Loud

I’m tired.

DSC_1625

Like I mentioned before, this week has been rough for me. This whole year, actually. Right now I’m going through the toughest year of studies for biology majors and I feel like I’m in a constant state of exhaustion and lack of sleep. Most days, I have class in the mornings, and in the evenings, I either have long labs or go to the library till 11:30-12 at night with Kyle to study and get work done. That means I’m running around from 7 a.m till 12 at night most days and am fitting in at least 35 hours a week to my Organic Chemistry class alone. Along with that I have two other bio classes, bio lab, and French. And weekends? What are those? Just extra long study days with no class. It’s ridiculous.

Anyways, that turned in to a small rant. Hopefully your eyes didn’t glaze over too much haha! But in all honestly, I’m incredibly stressed and have been having a few breakdowns and a hard time mentally with all the work I have on my plate, which is something that’s hard for me to admit.

I’m still absolutely in love with the post my best friend Kelty wrote.

If you haven’t read her post “Never Merely Pretty” yet, do it. It’s something all women should read.

Never Merely Pretty. An empowering post that ALL women, young and old, should read.

The promise of Vietnamese food for dinner is the only thing that gets me through Wednesdays.

For both Kyle and I, Wednesdays suck. We both are stuck in morning classes and have labs so our day is pretty packed and we’re on our feet for most of the day. Since I have lab from 7-10 p.m, Kyle and I have a tradition of going to one of our favorite restaurants to get some delicious food to power us through!

My freelance writing gig is going well!

I haven’t talked about it too much on the blog, but a while back I was contacted to work for a fitness website as a freelance writer and recipe developer! So far, I’ve created three recipes for them (along with photography/writing/etc) and am excited to see them go up on the site. Here’s some examples of the goodies I’ve made!

I’m loving my new camera lens.

I’ve had my eye on the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens for a while, and finally broke down and planned on going to the camera store to buy one. Since I was home for weekend, my dad wanted to come with me (hi, dad!), and surprised me by insisting that he pay for it.

Pretty sure he’s Apple of My Eye’s biggest fan! Love you, dad!

So I realize that this post isn’t very coherent or organized, but hey, cut me some slack! I just had a big Organic Chemistry midterm yesterday and wrote a long research paper on worms that kept me up till 2 last night and working all day. My brain juices are a bit depleted ;).

Hope your hump day went well!

Thinking Out Loud #1

Today I’m going to be linking up to Thinking Out Loud so I can just type out whatever comes to my brain. Thanks, Amanda, for hosting!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. Tomorrow I’m going to be hauling some serious butt and cooking up a storm. I go back to school this Sunday and most likely won’t have too much free time to create new recipes. So, I’ve decided to try to stockpile some for future posts so I can keep Apple of My Eye going with a steady stream of blog posts.

Kyle is going to come over tomorrow and making his specialty: Chicken Noodle Soup!

IMG_1057

Also on the to-do list? Dark Chocolate Orange Avocado Truffles (a different take on my original Avocado Truffles), the BEST breakfast hash ever, and Brown Sugar Glazed Asian Roast (a family favorite).

Hopefully I make it out of the kitchen alive.

 2. How cute is this wallet?

DSC_1837

I got it right before Christmas, but didn’t find a good time to blog about it. I usually don’t like spending money on the thing that holds my cards and cash, but it was calling my name and right next to the checkout line. Way too easy to grab it and go! Luckily, TJ Maxx shot down the price so it wasn’t too pricy.

 3. HELP. Kyle’s birthday is coming up this month and I have no idea what to get him. This is a rough time of year for me (first world problem), because I have to figure out what to get him for Christmas, his birthday, and Valentine’s Day- all in quick succession.

In the past, I’ve gotten him a leather messenger bag, custom man-jewelry, a ski jacket, sweaters, a tennis jacket, a video game, a custom photo book, and who knows what else. I’m at a loss! If you have any brilliant ideas, I would appreciate it SO much if you could shoot me an email!

 4. I’m glad my post on How to Increase Your Pinterest Traffic was helpful to you guys! Those posts always take a long time to write and it makes me so happy to hear from you guys that they weren’t a total waste of time to read ;).

Increase your Pinterest traffic by following a few simple steps

5. I’m thinking about getting a new layout for Apple of My Eye. I’ve been eyeing the Thesis theme, but am a bit hesitant to have to go through the whole remodeling process again. Anyone else have any experience with it?

6. They just released seasons 5-8 of Dexter on Netflix. I know what I’ll be doing the next couple of days.

7. I went to the gym today and completed my “I Don’t Want to Workout” workout and one round of the “Arm Definer” workout on my Nike Training Club App. HOLY HECK was it hard! Definitely feeling the burn from the medicine ball pushups.

Andd that’s all that comes to mind at the moment! Check in tomorrow night for a tasty new recipe!
