Random Thoughts: Ethiopian Food + Disneyland + Styled Shoot

Hi friends!

I feel like things have been pretty bland around these parts in terms of keeping you guys in the loop about what’s going on in my life. I initially started AOME as more of a online diary as I traversed through college, but since then it’s grown to be a lot more tasty and a lot less personal. When I reached out to my readers on what they would like to read about the most, the winning choice was more behind-the-scenes and… I haven’t really been too great about keeping up with that. Oops.

So, consider this post an apology and the start of more random thoughts and life related posts. A lot of the times I don’t feel like I really have too much to write about since my days look relatively similar, but you guys asked and I shall deliver!

Let’s start with dinner last night!

Kyle has been working at SpaceX for the last few months and, since then, it’s been a struggle to spend as much time together as we normally do. I mean, when we’re back at Santa Barbara he’s at my house all the time (and shoutout to my housemates for accepting him in as one of the girls and asking “where’s Kyle?” when he doesn’t come over for a few days haha), but now he’s up at 6 a.m and isn’t home till after 7. Don’t get me wrong, we’re doing great together as usual (he’s my forever guy) and I am thrilled to see him working there, but we have to make an active effort to make the most out of his free time. To spice things up, we made plans with our old friend, Adrian, and his girlfriend to go on a double date to an Ethiopian restaurant.

Ethiopian Food Date

I have been dying to try Ethiopian food and have been nagging Kyle about it for the last two years. We found Ibex Ethiopian Food on Yelp and I drove the 30 or so minutes from my house to get there and meet up with everyone. Unfortunately, Adrian and Sadie accidentally typed in the wrong city to their GPS and ended up close to Hollywood, so by the time they realized their mistake, they were miles away around heavy traffic time. We decided to reschedule the double date with them since it would have taken them forever to get the restaurant and Kyle and I enjoyed a one-on-one date instead.

Ethiopian Food Date Night

So the food! It’s SO GOOD.

When Kyle and I initially got to the restaurant, we sat at the bar and chatted with the owner while we waited a table to open up. I asked him for his recommendation because it was my first time eating at an Ethiopian restaurant and he insisted that we try the fried trout since it was the best-selling dish there. We ended up ordering a vegetarian sampler dish that came with a fried trout and it was absolutely incredible!

After one bite, I realized that Ethiopian cuisine is full of balanced flavors and spices and incredibly fun to eat. You eat with your hands and use pieces of injera (a flat bread with a distinct sourdough taste) to scoop up the assortment of side dishes. We were served a variety of different cooked lentils as well as a salad and spiced carrots and potatos (I think?) and everything was simply amazing. For me, however, the fried trout took the cake and I was picking at the bones by the time I was through with it!

Even though Kyle and I could have easily split the vegetable sampler and trout dish, the owner and his wife, Lily, came out and insisted that they feed us one of their signature chicken entrees on the house and we couldn’t say no to trying more! While I forgot to snap a picture (too busy eating with my hands), it was perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and Kyle’s favorite dish from the night. We talked a bit more with the owners and Lily gave me her phone number and told us to give her a call the next time we plan on coming in and she would prepare a huge sampler so we could try bites from everything on their menu. Kyle and I were blown away by their generosity and kindness and can’t wait to take Adrian and Sadie there within the next few weeks!

Today (Friday) is going to be a pretty normal day for me and involves replying to emails and business inquiries, putting this post together, hitting the gym, working on lots of freelance work, and getting my photography website together. I haven’t talked about it much, but I am launching a new, revamped site up next week and it’s going to be b-e-a-utiful! This year is going to be huge for me in terms of diving head first into the wedding photography business and working with my friend, mentor, and soon-to-be business partner of sorts, Matt, to get established. I AM SO EXCITED. If you want to keep up with more of my photography shenanigans, feel free to follow my Instagram.

Tomorrow, I’m going to be spending a full day at Disneyland/California Adventures with Kyle, his little brother Adam, his girlfriend Taylor, and a bunch of friends that Kyle knows from the UCSB tennis club. Kyle’s Aunt works there and is able to get us in for free (!) and I am pumped to spend time with everyone, get my Disney on, and eat lots of junk food.

Oh! Sunday! Sunday is going to be amazing. Another local wedding photographer and I have been planning a styled bridal shoot for the past month and on Sunday, all of our plans come to fruition. We’re collaborating with a professional hair stylist and makeup artist as well as three gorgeous models to create some beautiful, portfolio-worthy art. There will be gorgeous bouquets and flower crowns from a florist, golden light, and a horse (!!) and I am so ready for our vision to be brought to life. I’ll probably recap the styled shoot on the blog, but if you want to see more behind-the-scenes from the day, follow my photography Instagram. (shameless plug round duos).

And that’s all she wrote!

I hope all of you have an amazing weekend!

On the Future (My Big Life Update )

This post has taken me forever to write.

I think the hesitation stems from two things: lack of time and, to be honest, I’ve had a sense of trepidation over putting things down in writing since they make things just that much more official. So here it goes!

Our Little Love Story

Good morning to all of you! I’m currently sitting at my kitchen table listening to the crash of the early morning waves and soft puppy snores of Charlie, the little dog we’re fostering for the weekend. Oh, and did I mention I have a giant latte in front of me? Life is good.

I want to start off this post by extending a giant hug to all of you guys who participated in my poll the other day on what YOU guys want to see more of on the blog. The option of wanting me to write more about my personal life and give an insight on the “behind-the-scenes” workings of Apple of My Eye won by a landslide and that brought a huge smile to my face and made my heart get a little flustered. It makes me all sort of giddy and excited to know that you guys want me to invest more of myself into my blog and I’m going to do my best to get more personal on the site!

For today, I thought it would be fun to tell you more about my relationship with Kyle. He pops up on the blog from time to time and even has a small sub-section under my “About Me”. I guess you could say that means we’re pretty serious 😉 .

So how to start with this little love story? We met for the first time our freshman year, but didn’t end up “getting together” (aka him popping the WILLYOUBEMYGIRLFRIEND LYKE FOR REALZ question) until early November of our sophomore year. I was in the same classes as a lot of his friends and even had some smaller flings and crushes on them (hehe shhhh), so we oftentimes were in the same general area of campus during passing periods and lunch. And yes, our relationship was forged in the bustling drama of teenage lunchtime. #intense. I even distinctly remember trying to set him up with a few of my friends. We ended up going to one of our school’s formals together as “friends”, which helped spark the whole dating thing.

Update: he also just mentioned to me that he also tried to set me up with a few of his close friends, so I guess you could say we’re glad that neither of us are apparently very good at matchmaking haha.

 Kyle Relationship Post Formal

Like all things high school, our relationship was a bundle of awkwardness, general not knowing what the heck was going on, and getting to know each other throughout the rest of our time in high school. Highlights include having the WORST (we laugh about it all the time now, he actually apologized for how bad it was after it was over haha) first kiss ever, many more formals and proms, homecoming court, our school’s senior Europe trip, and more.Kyle Relationship Post Prom#1 Kyle Relationship Post HS 551090_4162109134485_335640478_n Kyle Relationship Post Europe

Kyle Relationship Post Eiffel for him

I captioned this “Eiffel for him” on Facebook and was pretty damn pleased with myself ;)

While it feels a bit strange for me to describe a relationship that started in high school as a “love story”, we’ve been able to grow up together through those crucial teenage years and because of that, we have an incredibly strong bond (he’s without a doubt my best friend) and a shared history full of happy memories. And the most unbelievably wonderful thing that still blows my mind is that it doesn’t stop here. Throughout the upcoming years we’ll only continue to grow closer and closer and more deeply and sincerely in love with each other. A lot of gross, sticky-sweet love talk, but my sentiments completely resonate with Brad Paisley’s song “Then”:

Towards the end of our senior year of high school, everyone was frantic over applying and choosing colleges. At that time, Kyle and I had only been dating for about a year and a half and we agreed that we weren’t going to base our college choices off of each other. We both had a pretty clear idea on what we wanted to do (he has always been set on engineering and I’ve always loved biology) and neither of us wanted to hinder or bias the other in choosing the best college fit. We were planning on staying together and trying to manage a long-distance relationship, but life had other (happier!) plans for us.

2015Christine&Kyle-35

At the time, I had absolutely no idea that Kyle had even applied to UCSB. I was pretty sure that I wanted to go to Santa Barbara because my parents had met there (more on that later!), my sister was currently enrolled there, it has a great biology department and gorgeous campus, and it was close, but not toooo close, to home. It wasn’t till Kyle randomly texted me that he had committed to UCSB that I even had the faintest idea that he was considering it! I read the text, promptly screamed and dropped my phone, then frantically called him. It turns out that he had decided on a whim to send in his application to the school as a “why not” kind of thing and once he got his acceptance letter, he started to look into the school more closely and realized that UCSB was ranked #7 in the WORLD in Engineering/Technology. We had both been offered spots in their  honors program, which also helped sway his choice. That upcoming academic year, we both were placed only a floor apart in one of the huge dorms and, instead of trying to work out a long distance relationship in which we would have been miles upon miles apart, he was a 30 second walk up the stairs and down the hallway. Go figure 😉 .

Ever since then, we’ve been inseparable and have been tackling the college world together! We’ll be graduating next year and have plans to find our first official apartment together (even though we lived literally 5 steps away from each other last year in apartments with our friends) and to continue with our education as Kyle pursues his masters in Material Engineering (he has a FREAKING AMAZING internship at SpaceX this summer, so we’ll see where that takes him) and I work on my higher education as well *being vague on purpose, this deserves its own lengthy post*.

To end this, I thought it would be fun to bring a little bit of Kyle into the post. He pops up often, but I don’t think you guys have ever heard much from him directly. I’ll try to describe him a little before he takes the reigns!

First off, please excuse me while I gush a little. Kyle is wonderful and amazing and great and I could go on and on and on incoherently with love-y adjectives, but I’ll try to slow down and describe him a bit more thoroughly. To say that Kyle is supportive and loving is a huge understatement. I have honestly never in my entire life met someone as genuinely kind, understanding, altruistic, trusting, honest, supportive, humble, intelligent, committed, dependable, responsible, gahhh if you haven’t quite grasped it yet, he’s almost weirdly perfect. I also think he’s pretty cayuutteeee and I’ve never been known to complain about those broad shoulders 😉 . He’s the kind of guy who always opens the door for you, insists on carrying anything weighing over a pound (seriously, it’s like he doesn’t think I have arms or something), brings me coffee without me having to ask, laughs and goes along with my obnoxious and terribly corny puns, spends hours searching through sites like Etsy to find that one personalized gift he knows I’d love, is patient and understanding when I’m being irrational and hormonal, and so much more. He makes me feel unbelievably loved and makes me a better person on a daily basis.

So without all that sappy-ness, here’s the boy!

Kyle:

I tend to have a harder time writing than Christine does, especially coming up with smooth intros (this being a perfect example). First let me say she is incredibly loving, fun, kindhearted, intelligent, hardworking, driven, exciting, passionate… the list goes on and on. She brightens up every part of my life and makes me strive to be better. She more important to me than I could ever hope to write down. And yes, her corny puns are actually funny. And in case you were wondering, yes, all of her recipes are as absolutely delicious as they look (I’ve tried pretty much all of them, be jealous). She is amazing at so many things and I am SO lucky and blessed to be able to have Christine be a part of my life and to be a part of hers. She’s one of those people you know will go far in life within the first minute of meeting her. She’s the kind of friend you always want by your side. I can go on and on, but I’ll cut it short by saying she is everything I could ever ask for in a girl and I love her very very much. She asked me to write a short snippet on why I think we work so well together, and I guess it’s because, in addition to sorta kinda liking each other, we can literally do anything together. From running, eating, cooking, watching netflix, going to the gym, doing school work, which we do way too much, we are always happier together.

So there you have it! A brief look into our relationship. In short: we’re both incredibly happy each other and very much in love.

(A big thank you to this guy for loving me unconditionally and putting up with all my craziness!)

Meet Tucker!

Hi there, friends! How’s the week going for ya so far?

Things around here are about to pick up and get a bit more crazy for me. As some of you might know, my college is on the quarter system, so I am constantly being bombarded with midterms and falling behind in classes, even if just a little, will screw you over since the pace is so fast. It’s week 8, which means that the next big wave of work is rushing my way. I’m going to keep this post short and sweet since I have an essay to finish and a genetics midterm to study for, but I couldn’t help but write up a quick post about the new puppy that Kyle’s family got over the weekend.

Meet Tucker, aka the cutest, squirmiest, most lovable little black lab you’ll ever meet. He is a champion cuddler and plays so hard that he gets plain “tuckered” out 😉 . This pup can go from running (more like waddling) around chasing all of his toys to asleep and passed out in a corner in 10 seconds flat. So so so so cute and I’m dying over that face AHHHHHHHH <3.

DSC_3868

And guess who thought of the name? ME. I joke that, since I named their new dog, I must be officially part of his family hahah! Anyways, we drove back to our hometown from Santa Barbara to meet the little booger and just had the most amazing, smile-filled weekend ever. It breaks my heart to know that we won’t be back for another four weeks! Luckily, Kyle’s mom is sending in daily updates/photos to help with the major pulpy withdrawals I’ve been having.

DSC_3845 DSC_3858

Kyle’s family just lost their old yellow lab, Shadow, about a year ago and have been hesistant about getting another dog. After hearing about a new litter of puppies from some family friends who were getting their first dog, though, the puppy-bug hit them again and they decided to get one of the brothers. They have the perfect house and backyard for a puppy (complete with a barn, chickens to chase and befriend/horse riding trails to explore) and Kyle’s mom is the most amazing animal caretaker you’ll ever meet. Tucker is going to have such a happy life!

DSC_3827 DSC_3839 DSC_3821 DSC_3867And on the note of cute animals, I also was hired to photograph a family in the neighborhood and it just so happens that they have some baby bunnies. You guys, I was greeted at the door when I arrived with a basket of insanely fluffly and soft baby bunnies. SOMEONE PINCH ME. What is life right now 😯 .

Andddd it’s time for me to get back to work. Thanks for reading my semi-incoherent puppy ramblings 😉 .

Best of January!

So here we are. One month into the 2015 and January has passed me by like whaaaaat.  I think it’s completely crazy how fast the time flies. Now we’re into February and I’m hoping to get in some really adorable, love-themed recipes for ya’ll!

I signed up for my first half marathon! Training has been going well and I’ve been getting through all my runs. I didn’t think these words would ever come form my mouth, but running is addicting. To all those marathoners and cross country runners: I take back everything I used to think about you guys being crazy! Running is such an exhilarating way of moving your body.

Wheewwww. Looking back, January was a pretty successful blogging month for me! I decided to sign up for an easier schedule this quarter (going back to my post on letting go) and it has made a huge difference for me in terms of being able to put more of my heart into my blog. Can’t wait to see what February has in store for me!

Question of the Day: What’s one of the highlights from January for you?
