Understanding Menopause and Testosterone

Fun fact about the women on the Asian side of my family: my mom/aunt/grandma are obsessed with death. And I know that sounds super morbid, but they talk about it in almost a comical way. Saturday night dinners at my obachan’s house are spent with the women clucking like chickens about wanting their grave to have an ocean view, what songs they want played at their funerals (my mom’s choice is Somewhere Over the Rainbow, because I’m sure all of you guys are dying (see what I did there?) to know), and what they want us to do with their ashes (I want you to carry me everywhere you go and have me perched by the living room…. They joke).

Another topic they LOVE to talk about? Menopause. And hormones.  My mom loves to remind me that it’s still possible for me to be an older sister *shudder*.

However, they aren’t always too up to date on their facts, which is why this guest post is definitely something that they could find useful!

Understanding Menopause and Testosterone
Hormonal balance is vital to physical and emotional health. This concept is considered ‘gender neutral’, but the perception changes when discussing certain hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen.
Estrogen is viewed as a staple of femininity, while testosterone signifies masculine traits. Although men and women produce different amounts of these hormones, each is present in the bodies of both sexes.

Causes of Low Testosterone during Menopause:
Aging:
The aging process is the most common cause of low testosterone in women and men. Testosterone levels in women can begin drop in pre menopause years and accelerate after age 40.

Ovarian Surgery:
Most female testosterone is produced in the ovaries. Women of all ages who have had their ovaries removed are prone to low T.

Stress and Lifestyle:

Cortisol is a stress hormone that can lower T production. Menopausal women with excess stress may see faster drops in testosterone.

Effects and Treatments of Low Testosterone during Menopause:
For women, menopausal systems can include depression, lower energy and reduced sexual desire. Aside from personal effects, menopause can take a toll on relationships.

Sexual Desire and Pleasure:
Menopausal treatments often focus on treating physical symptoms, such as dryness or hot flashes. Unfortunately, estrogen and progesterone do little to restore libido that suffers from menopause. Prescriptions that replace these hormones but do not address low T can increase imbalances.
Low T is most correlated with drops in sexual energy and enjoyment. Testosterone is helpful to restoring sensation in the nipples and clitoris for sexual arousal. By doing so, an increase in female orgasms could also result.

Relationships:
Beyond personal effects, menopause can take a toll on relationships. This most applies to physical and emotional intimacy. Hormone balances affect mood and energy. Spouses may feel neglected by emotional distance that stems from disinterest or depression.
A lack of sexual desire often makes a partner feel unattractive or inadequate. Testosterone contributes to the libido and energy that can revitalize relationships.

Body Composition:
Women of all fitness levels can experience changes in body composition during menopause. Those with typically active lifestyles may notice declines in endurance and drops in strength. Women during menopause could have reduced results from workout routines.
Despite intense workouts, rises in underarm fat and drops in muscle tone may affect self-image. Testosterone is crucial to building lean muscle mass and reducing body fat.  The effects beyond appearance also raise health concerns for women with low T.
Bone strength may decline with age and increase the risk of osteoporosis. Testosterone strengthens bones to reduce the threat of breaks.

Treating Low Testosterone during Menopause:
Changes to hormone levels are unique and determine the extent of testosterone replacement for each woman. Hormone replacement therapy is frequently used during menopause. Therapies may add testosterone to estrogen replacement for otherwise healthy women. Women who have had their ovaries removed may require special considerations.
Since men produce T in greater amounts, many males turn to testosterone boosters during ‘manopause’. The female body produces much smaller portions, so women must use discretion in choosing testosterone supplements and dosages.
Considerations:
Working with a medical professional is advised to ensure effective results. It is important to customize testosterone therapy in women. Despite body and mind benefits, excess testosterone can negatively affect female health during menopause or other life stages.
Oral T supplements may cause drops in HDL cholesterol that offset heart benefits from replacing estrogen. Taking too much testosterone may also result in masculine effects for some women.

Brown Sugar Asian Glazed Beef

There are some recipes that are just winners.

You know what I mean, those recipes that fill up your family recipe collection and get ragged and dirty from their years of use.   The BEST Brown Sugar Asian Glazed Meat. A family favorite that is ridiculously delicious! And seriously, this Brown Sugar Asian Glazed Beef is a winner on a freakin’ Olympic level when it comes to flavor and deliciousness. I’m talking fight over the last piece, can’t wait for leftovers at lunch kinda good. It’s salty-sweet perfection at it’s finest, and I’ve never met a single (non-vegetarian) person who hans’t loved it! In fact, it’s probably one of my favorite dishes of all time.

The BEST Brown Sugar Asian Glazed Meat. A family favorite that is mouthwateringly delicious!!I have such good memories that revolve from this dish. You know those little moments that seem to stand out and make you smile? Well, anyways, when I was younger, my mom used to cook this beauty every few weeks for our family. Now, my sister is a pescatarian, so when it came to the main meat-eaters in the family, it was a tie between me and my dad (remember the potato loving Norwegian viking?). My dad is one of those guys who can go the whole day without eating, then demolish a massive meal for dinner. With this asian meat, he would probably have 8 thick slices, a mountain of rice, and a pile of whatever veggie side dish my mom would make. After, he would lean back in his chair, rub his painfully full stomach, and tell my mom that it was all her fault for stuffing him like that. Then, he would move a solid foot and a half to a nearby couch and take a nap to sleep off the food coma. Every. Single. Time.

Enough of my small moments- I’m sure you came to hear more about the food! The BEST Brown Sugar Asian Glazed Meat. A family favorite that is ridiculously delicious!!

Like I mentioned before, it’s combines the absolutely dreamy match of brown sugar and soy sauce, and when you get the perfect bite of meat to rice ratio, you’re tastebuds get sent to those pearly white gates. Heaven! Not to mention the meat turns out fantastically juicy and basically just melts in your mouth.

Need a perfect side dish? My Garlic Ginger Bok Choy is a delicious healthy addition to round out the meal!

This recipe makes a ton of food, so it’s perfect for a family or if you have a big group of hungry lumberjacks to feed! Not looking to feed a continent? It’s also very easily halved!

WIAW: A Day In The Life

Today was a jam-packed day. Or, to describe it more accurately, it was an apple butter-packed day. I know, I know. Worst intro ever

Anyways, it’s been a busy day, but the fruits of my labor (okay, I promise to stop now) are paying off and I’m starting off my Winter quarter on the right foot and (hopefully) am getting into a pattern of balancing school work with cooking, workouts, blogging, friends, and Kyle

Here’s a look into my busy Tuesday with interjections of my eats courtesy of WIAW! Thanks, Jenn, for hosting!

My day started around 6:10 a.m and I groggily checked my phone, which I keep on a desk next to my bed. Now that I think about it, I probably am going to end up from some sort of unknown cancer from having all those cell phone rays (is that even a thing) so close to my brain. Anyways, I digress. So I opened my phone, read some emails, promptly read them over again because I can’t understand or compute anything at 6:10 in the morning, and then nimbly dropped it on my face because I have the world’s best motor skills. Not fun, but it certainly woke me up!

I crawled out of bed, took a shower, half-did my makeup, read and commented on a few lovely blogs, and ate a breakfast of yogurt, cottage cheese, and fruit. (Too boring to post a picture).

Then, I rushed to my 8 a.m Organic Chemistry class and sat through a long lecture. By the end of it, my brain juices were basically depleted, so I used the 40 minutes between my Chemistry and French class to grab a mocha from our campuses’ cafe and browse Pinterest/answer a few emails on my iPad mini (thanks Dad- I love it!).

Then, it was off to my French class, followed by an interesting biology lecture on ecology. While I had a busy day, I was done with class by 12:30 and had plenty of time to work on non-school related things!

I came back to my apartment, cleaned up the living room/took down Christmas decorations, started making my Pumpkin Spice Apple Butter while watching Dexter on Netflix, and prepared a fast and easy lunch. I know it sounds like a weird combo, but that apple butter (which tastes like the inside of an apple pie, by the way) pairs AMAZINGLY with cottage cheese. I made a big batch to have as a healthy, protein-packed snack or breakfast.DSC_1828 DSC_1831I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this yet before, but I recently was contacted and hired by a women’s fitness and health website as a freelance writer (!!!). This is actually the second job opportunity that I’ve had directly due to Apple of My Eye, and I can’t even express how cool it is to have a hobby lead to new work experiences! Anyways, one of my first couple assignments is to create a recipe and write a corresponding post with it.

Here’s a small (unbaked) teaser of the healthy Apple Crumble Fruit Bars I created!

DSC_1846After the bars were done baking, I walked over to a nearby small gym that is owned by our apartment complex and did 25 minutes of a HITT elliptical workout, followed by a 20 minute interval workout on the treadmill. To round everything off, I did a few arm and leg exercises (holy jump lunges).

IMG_3983Once I got back, I snacked on a banana while I cooked up some panko crusted salmon, Balsamic Garlic Brussels Sprouts, and brown rice for dinner for Kyle and I. Kyle was off playing tennis till 9 at night, so I wanted to make sure he had a good dinner waiting for him when he got back!

IMG_3990 IMG_3992Post-dinner work included writing up most of the article for my recipe, replying to a few more emails, and studying a bit for my classes. Oh, and a bit of online shopping on Hautelook. How cute is this?!

Cute pink workout topNow, time to sleep!

Garlic Ginger Bok Choy

A couple days ago, Kyle and I went to town with getting a few recipes ready for Apple of My Eye. Let me tell ya, cooking is exhausting. We were both more than ready to take a nap after and recharged by eating a half gallon of S’mores ice-cream while watching Netflix on the couch. We make a good team.

In total, we prepared and photographed four new recipes to share, one of which was this ridiculously easy and tasty Garlic Ginger Bok Choy recipe.
Garlic Ginger Bok Choy- healthy, easy, and done in under 10 minutes!!

It doesn’t get much easier than this! Ready in literally 10 minutes from start to finish, it’s bursting with flavor, color, and nutrition to boot! It makes the perfect healthy side dish and pairs well with so many different main dishes. Kyle and I were definitely thankful that this recipe came together so quickly after all our other cooking endeavors!

Garlic Ginger Bok Choy- healthy, easy, and done in under 10 minutes

Bok Choy is a powerhouse of vitamin A and C and one cup of the tasty vegetable contains more that 100% of your recommended vitamin A and 75% of your recommended vitamin C. Along with that, it has only 9 calories per shredded cup and is the perfect way to balance out a heavier meal, like the Brown Sugar Glazed Asian Beef I paired it with. (Recipe to come this week- it’s a long-time family favorite!)

A great asian side dish!If you’re ever in need of a speedy side dish to round out a meal, this is the perfect recipe for you!

Enjoy!

Marvelous In My Monday

Happy (err… Can Monday even be described like that?) Monday!

My college starts back up today, which means more late nights in labs and endless amounts of studying. However, it also means that I’m reunited with some of my best friends and get to enjoy a few weeks of an easier course load before my midterms are here.DSC_1650Guess there’s a silver lining in everything- including Mondays!

Which brings us to today’s post: another rendition of Marvelous in My Monday!

 Marvelous is date night!

IMG_1469Kyle and I spent Friday night at a fancy restaurant by the pier called The Lobster. While neither of ordered lobster, we both really enjoyed our meal and getting to spend some quality time together. It’s always nice to dress up a bit and enjoy a romantic getaway, even if it’s just for a dinner date!

Marvelous is cute new cooking accessories!

Kyle’s mom got me an adorable cookie stamp as part of her Christmas gift to me. Along with that, Kyle got me the cutest set of measuring spoons from a small store in a town nearby to where we went skiing. Useful and the perfect prop to my food photography!
