DIY Food Photography Table Board

Make your own rustic wood backdrop!Hi there everyone! Kyle here and it feels great to be back with another post on this wonderful blog! This one is about something I can actually boast some experience with: building stuff. More specifically, putting together a photography backboard (the one you’ve seen lately in Christine’s photos).

This project was really fun, and I it turned out better than I had hoped, which is always a rare (and really nice) occurrence! Just as a disclaimer, I used power tools but if you haven’t before, you should avoid using them unless you have experience working with the machines. They’re extremely dangerous and you can do all the things in this project without them with no problem. So, that being said, let’s begin!

First thing, which may seem obvious, is that you have to do is get an idea of what you want to make. Otherwise you will likely make mistakes and take way more time getting to your finished product than you would prefer. For Christine’s boards, we referenced a few boards from other sites, primarily Pinch of Yum (Christine has a girl-crush on Lindsay) and Bree Franklin. Christine showed me those boards, told me what size she wanted, and were able to work together to put together a plan for building it.

Here’s what Lindsay’s board looks like:

Once you have decided on the basics of your design, you need to get materials. Home Depot is always a great place to find anything and everything you need. It’s basically my version of going shopping at the mall. Along with that, the employees are always really helpful, so feel free to ask for their advice/help. For these types of backboards I would recommend getting thin pine planks, around 1 inch thick, since they absorb stains well and tend to have really unique abnormalities. Christine hand picked the ones she wanted, which were the most beat up and rough looking ones available. We were trying to go for a more rustic feel, so the more blemishes we could find, the more we like the piece of wood!

For the stain there will be a catalog of types and colors that you can peruse (peruse is such a great word isn’t it?). Christine and I decided on “Cordovan Brown” as  our transparent stain. Transparent stains are great for this because they do not conceal the natural knots and marking of the wood in addition to giving it a richer color.

Now that you have your materials it’s time to start building!

1. Set yourself up. When I begin a project I start by getting out all of the tools I will need and set up a sort of workstation for myself. I prefer to use two sawhorses and an old piece of plywood in our backyard. Tools you will need are a saw, a tape measure, a pencil, painting materials, sandpaper, hammer, nails, and wood glue.

2. Measure, mark, and cut. I am sure you all have heard the saying “measure twice, cut once.” (Christine: “nope”).Well, do it. It really slows you down and is just a bummer when you measure incorrectly and your parts don’t fit. We made our boards about three feet long and alternated different width sizes to give the boards more uniqueness. After measuring, feel free to cut away!

***IMPORTANT: If you don’t have the proper tools, or just don’t want to cut wood yourself, you can just ask the workers at Home Depot to cut your wood for you! I enjoy working on projects and didn’t have any other work (WOO spring break!) so I gladly did it all myself =) , but it’s always easier and faster to just have the Home Depot peeps cut the wood for you!***

3. Paint paint paint. I found it best to paint each individual board before connecting them, to give the whole fake table a less uniform look. We used two coats of paint for the table this time. Once dried, try sanding down the wood a bit to give it a nice, roughed-up appearance. If you’re feeling particularly angry or are just in a thrashin’ sort of mood feel free to throw the boards around a bit or hit them with a hammer. They can take it! And it might just make them look better while working double-duty as cheap therapy, win-win right?

4. Put it all together. For the next part, connecting your planks, there are two options I would suggest. First option is to just set all your planks onto another surface and glue and nail them down. We used masonite but scrap wood, plywood, or even thick cardboard will likely work just fine. The other option would be to just not connect the boards. Instead, you can just line them up on a table and put whatever you’re going to take a picture of on top. This is a bit easier, although you will have a bundle instead of a board as your final project. The choice is yours!

The lighting here makes the board not have as rich colors, but look at all that character!

Also, if you’re wondering where my helpful girlfriend was this whole time, she was off playing with our family’s chickens. As in, she was taking pictures of their butts so she could come ask me, “Guess what?!? CHICKEN BUTT”. We’re very mature.

So there you have it! A somewhat lengthy outline on how to put together a photo-board for all your photographic endeavors! Hopefully you find this post helpful and you all can soon get your own unique, nifty backgrounds!

Valentine’s Day Recap!

Happy Sunday, friends! I hope everyone is having a great weekend :). I’m linking up to Marvelous In My Monday to share my marvelous V-Day date!

Here’s a quick recap of my Valentine’s Day!

Valentine's Day Date 2014

The day started with waking up around 7, getting some work done, then leaving for the gym at around 10:30. I had a great workout and finished just in time to get to my biology class (which is conveniently located just 2 minutes away by bike). After my class, I headed back to my apartment to shower, study, and relax before a fun night out!

Kyle greeted me with a few gorgeous gifts as well! One really sweet thing about Kyle is how much effort and love he puts into picking out the perfect gifts. He customized both the pillow and glass etching for me and I love how original they are!

Though we weren’t going out to the same restaurants with our dates, I got ready with my friend, Tiana, and snagged a picture with her before leaving around 6:40 for the drive into the mountains. Isn’t she gorgeous?!

Also, I ended up going with the dusty pink lace dress for the night! I was torn between two outfits, and at the last minute chose to go with this one. I love how it draped flatteringly on my body type and how romantic it looked. Thanks for all of your input!

Since we had a reservation, we were seated immediately and dished up some warm, homemade bread. For our starters, Kyle ordered the lobster bisque and I got the house salad. My main course included mouthwatering BBQ ribs with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus, while Kyle got a juicy steak. Both were delicious! Dessert included a tasting platter with a fruit tart, dense dark chocolate brownie, and sugar cookie- all enjoyed with coffee!

I didn’t snag too many pictures from the dinner since I wanted to concentrate on enjoying my time with Kyle, so here are the few that I took!

I had a wonderful time and am always so thankful to get to spend some special alone time with Kyle. Thanks for a great night, love!

Hope all of you are enjoying your weekend :).

Kyle’s Birthday Recap!

Hi there, lovelies!

As some of you might know, this last Friday was Kyle’s birthday! Kyle's birthday!Since it was the start of a weekend and we both didn’t have much work to do, we were able to plan out  a great day and a night out with friends to celebrate! Here’s a recap:

Kyle’s birthday shenanigans started off in the morning with him opening up the presents I got him. I know, I know, first world problems, but I always find it difficult this time of year because there’s Christmas, Kyle’s birthday, and Valentine’s Day all in quick succession and boys can be really hard to shop for. I ended up getting creative and got him a panini  press and cookbook. If you spend more than a day with him, you’ll quickly figure out that Kyle is a bit sandwich-obsessed and is a big fan of tinkering around with machines (that’s a mechanical engineer for ya).

DSC_1981Luckily, he LOVES it and has made four paninis in the last two days. He even has his friends bringing over sandwich making material to his apartment to borrow it and they all rave about it haha! I’m sure that thing is going to get a ton of good use.

DSC_1986After Kyle opened his gifts and tried out the press (holy smokes was it tasty), we both got dressed and headed out to get in a good workout at the gym. Along with doing 30 minutes of cardio and a full body weight lifting routine, Kyle showed me a fantastic ab workout on an incline bench. It’s safe to say that my muscles are feeling a bit immobile at the moment.

Also, did I ever mention that I randomly discovered that I can do pull-ups? The last time I tried a couple of months ago, I couldn’t even get up half way, and now I’m able to do two in a row! Progress!

After the gym, we came back home, showered, and I sat down to do a bit of work before our reservation at a Thai restaurant for dinner. We had ten of our closest friends with us and took over the small place! IMG_1536 IMG_1547The boys were intent on making Kyle show off his chest hair… Don’t ask me why, I don’t know either. IMG_1549The boys ordered a ton of dishes to share, while I stuck to the classic Beef Pad Thai. It was beyond delicious and I can’t wait to go back to that authentic, hole in the wall restaurant!IMG_1543 IMG_1538After dinner, we headed out to grab some ice cream at McConnell’s. If you’re ever up in the Santa Barbara area, you have to get a scoop or five. While it’s pretty pricey, they churn up the most delicious and unique flavors! IMG_1552 IMG_1553Then, after our ice cream run, we headed back to the apartments to get ready for a night out of dancing and more fun with friends. IMG_1557I hope you had a great birthday, Kyle! You’re such a wonderful, loving, intelligent, and fun guy and I love you with all of my heart. I feel so blessed to have you in my life and can’t wait to celebrate another birthday with you next year!IMG_1530

3 Year Anniversary Recap!

Hi guys!

I know, I know, I’ve been a bad blogger lately.

My life right now pretty much revolves around college and studying, so I feel as if there just isn’t anything interesting to blog about! (Do any of you guys get in this rut?)

Anyways, here’s an update on what’s been going on in my life lately!

On the 6th I had my 3 year anniversary with Kyle.

Kyle and Christine 2

I didn’t get out of class till 8:30 at night, so we put off our big anniversary dinner till today. Kyle, however, offered to make dinner for me when I got back and went all out with rib eye steak and LOBSTER. It was absolutely delicious and we had leftover steak for the next day. Steak leftovers? Not bad for college students!

Not only did he cook me dinner, but he put in the extra effort to make the meal lovely and intimate with candles and flowers. I can’t even express how much I love and appreciate him!

We also exchanged anniversary gifts and I loved how thoughtful his present is. He knows I love custom things, and ordered a beautiful, handcrafted ring from Etsy for me!

My present to him was a leather messenger bag. I swear that boy has been talking about getting one since high school, and I knew he would love the “mountain-man-y” colors and material. He loved it and has been using it everyday!

Tonight we will be going on our “official” anniversary date to Cold Spring Tavern. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you might recognize the restaurant since we’ve gone there twice before for another anniversary and Valentine’s Day. We’ve decided that it’s “our place”!

img_1823

I’m ridiculously excited for tonight and feel so unbelievably blessed to have Kyle in my life. I could go on and on about him and all of his wonderful, wonderful qualities!

These past three years have been the best of my life and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us!

Kyle, you’re my rock, the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I love you with all my heart and soul.
